Tenacity is one of our favorite words. It seems the appropriate word to sum up the spring Bristol race for 2004. The AMSOIL Chevy got in a hole early but luckily the team had a never die attitude and was able to climb from the lowest of lowes to a respectable finish.
It's never a good sign when lap one is the lap that contact is made. Unfortunately for the ECI Express, a fast closing Tim Wortman nicked the back bumper of the car while the driver was struggling to hold on with tires that weren't quite warmed up yet. Kevin gassed the car and kept it down toward the apron and everyone was able to scoot around on the outside. Hustling to get the car righted, Kevin zoomed away and was able to stay on the lead lap. From that point on the goal was to keep it pointing in the right direction and methodically pick the way through the field and see what would become of it.
In a sense the early spin was a good omen. It meant that the troubles for the red-white-and blue mount were over and Kevin kept the fenders on the car and dodged the mayhem. Starting from the back had it's issues however as a long green flag run almost relegated the team to one lap down. The caution fell at an opportune time and then it was off for a top five.
Kevin got one scare about lap 138 when warp caused a lapped car on the inside groove to make contact and resulted in some significant rear end damage to the car. The crew was called to action and after several pitstops to correct some issues, the car was competitive again.
Kevin kept his cool, dodged one pretty serious wreck at about the 3/4 mark and capitalized on others misfortune to sail home for well earned and long-time coming 3rd place.
