The state of Delaware is traversed in a north-south direction by historic Route 13. Somewhere near the middle lies the state capital city of Dover. Delaware is a relatively quiet state normally but twice a year it comes alive with the roar of NASSCAR racing. The fall classic had all of the drama necessary as the outcome was nothing but ordinary. For many of the challengers for the cup, there was heartache and for others, well they might just look back on this race as the pivitol point in the chase for the cup.
Twenty cars took to the grid and everyone was a bit cautious on cool tires after last weeks thrashing at Loudon. Ten laps were in the books and the AMSOIL Chevy was comfortably settled into the thirteenth position. Thirteen, doesn't that represent bad luck? Why did that have to be mentioned! Kevin yielded the low line to a fast approaching Bruce Walsh between three and four but it looked as if Bruce had some trouble holding the car down and clipped the back end of the ECI Express. Kevin planted his foot on the throttle in attempts of keeping the car off the wall and almost did a complete three-sixty. The result - only slight contact with the barrierl and minimal damage.
Pitting with the rest of the crowd, the crew banged out the rear quarter panel and sent the battered thirty-nine on it's way. Kevin played it safe for the rest of the race and hung tough. Lap forty-seven provided an opportunity to lead a lap and garner five bonus points. From there it was a hard charge to the finish.
As far as the competition, the night was eventful. Stan Nickle had his game crash to the desktop while running in the top five. The resultant crash took a fast running David Gray out of contention. Restarts were tricky as Jeff Mahan learned. Jeff buzzed the tires on the lap thirty-two restart, collected Norm Adkins and solidly wrapped the wall effectively ending his bid for the win. Other contenders had troubles too as Jeff Maddox, Tom Maslyk and Glenn Brown all saw problems at some point in the race.
As for the AMSOIL Team, well they kept plugging away.
