Race Report - April 26th, 2005In another first for NASS, the Lightning division made a spring stop at the Phoenix International Speedwy. NASSCAR is always looking to make the schedule more weather friendly and placing a second date for Phoenix was just what the doctor order.
The AMSOIL Chevy had a good test and held a ton of optomism coming into the race. The car was at the top of the speed charts in practice for much of the session and everyone was optomistic of a good run. Kevin slipped up coming out of turn four on the first qualifying lap and it cost him on both laps. Still he garnered a sixth place starting spot. In the first fifteen laps, Kevin was on a mission. He charged up to third place and then unfortunate happend on lap 25. Kevin was running 3rd on lap 14 when the caution waived for the second time in the event. The field had only run nine or ten laps and the top three stayed out while the rest of the cars pitted. Kevin was the last car in line on old tires. He held his own for quite a few laps but then started slipping back a position every couple of laps. On lap 26 while running sixth, Scott Olson got a nose under the AMSOIL Chevy on the exit of turn one. A moment later there was a bit of side warp from Scotts car and it couldn't have come at a worst place as the resulting contact bumped the ECI Express at a time where you're heading right for the wall off the corner. Kevin bounced hard off the wall and then was struck by several oncoming cars.
The resultant damage was enough to render the team to also-ran status. If not to add insult to injury, Kevin had contact with a lapped car on lap 107 and the resultant crash damaged the motor and the race was over for the NJ based team.
