Race Report - May 31st, 2005 - Race 12 of 33

The AMSOIL Chevrolet rolled into the hometown track for the NASSCAR circuit and unloaded with a full head of steam. Fast in practice, qualifying yielded the best starting spot for the year as Kevin stepped off third when the green flag waived. Starting cautiously, Kevin dropped to fourth early on but then charged forward and jumped back to third on lap three. Riding with the leaders all was going well until a caution waived on lap twenty-four. Everyone, Kevin included, ducked in for tires and a costly and bizarre error occurred on pit road. Kevin followed James Suggs in to his pit stall but he was supposed to move around James and missed his pit box. After correcting the error and loosing many spots, Kevin then spun the tires, careened off eventual winner Francois Couillard, and into the inside barrier leaving pit road. The car was slightly damaged and that's not good on an aero sensitive track like Lowes.

Kevin returned to the track in eight place and struggled for the rest of the night to keep pace with the lead pack. At Lowes you benefit from the draft immensely and if you find yourself alone, you have to work that much hard to keep pace. Tire wear and slow lap times result for those who have the unfortunate experience of driving damaged race cars. In the end, Kevin hung on and finished a respectable eighth. He was not a challenger for the win but considering the circumstances an eighth place finish is that difficult to take.
