Race Report - June 7th, 2005 - Race 13 of 33The Monster Mile can take a bite out of you and spit you out if you're not careful. Very few races require the level of concentration, smoothness, and the aspect of get all you can out of every lap. This year's race was no exception as it followed a common pattern of several short cautions, a long green flag run (with green flag pitstops) and then a quick caution before a race ending charge.
The AMSOIL mount was decent off the trailer and Kevin put down another solid qualifying lap this week with a fifth place run. Settling in and keeping pace, the ECI express looked stout throughout the night as good tire management helped Kevin drive from ninth to second before green flag pitstops shuffled the running order on lap seventy two. Coming out of the pits in fifth, Kevin started making his way to the front again when the caution waived only three laps later.
With relatively new tires, the crew gambled on leaving him out there and he held the top spot, and other drivers with fresher tires off for nineteen laps before Michel Palardy would work his way by and retake the top spot. Even though the tires had a few more laps then many of the other lead lap runners, Kevin was able to maintain a solid pace and was riding in third place when the next round of pitstops came at lap one-twenty-nine.
Some front runners short pitted and without a caution they had the advantage through the final segment. Still Kevin gave chase and was able to gain one position and came home in sixth. he might have had a shot for a top five but contact with a lapped car slowed his progress and let the third, fourth, and fifth place cars get away.
