Race Report - July 5th, 2005 - Race 17 of 36

The ECI NASSCAR lightning team has always generally run well at restrictor plate races and although trouble could come at any time, there's a certain level of comfort. The team almost pulled down a win in the truck series in the spring and came home tenth in the Daytona spring race. Kevin settled the AMSOIL Express in tenth place for qualifying. The pack shuffled at the start of the race and by the end of lap two Kevin found himself in fifteenth place. This was a blessing in disguise as a large crash that originated in the front half of the field involved seven cars and most likely would have collected the AMSOIL Chevy had it been in the vicinity. As it was Kevin had to take to the grass to avoid the incident but no damage was incurred. The team decided it was a good time to stay out and garner bonus points for leading. With five points in the bank, the mounted four tires and fuel for the lap ten restart.

Kevin restarted in eighteenth and steadily picked of spot after spot while making his way to seventh by the halfway point. A mid race caution brought everyone to the pits once more and then as luck would have it trouble would rear it's ugly head. On a restrictor plate race brakes are hardly a factor so it would be ironic that on the restart Kevin's would lock up and cause several competitors to scramble. Whenever he stepped on the gas pedal hard the brakes would come on and the car would lock up all four wheels. This problem plagued him for most of the race and didn't resolve itself until a late race restart when he was able to jump out and re calibrate his steering wheel. Very odd occurrence indeed.

With the problem resolve, Kevin found the need to charge from the back to the front once more and with five to go found himself once again in the seventh position. This time it wouldn't be a controller problem but a warp incident as Jim O'Dell and Kevin made contact with only three laps to go and the result was a spin and solid contact with the wall. Kevin limped the car back to the start finish line and as the race finished with a yellow checkered. The final tally was ninth place in the rundown.
