Race Report - August 23rd, 2005 - Race 23 of 36Wide and racy, Michigan may not be the most exciting track to watch a race at from a fan perspective but it sure is fun for a driver. Any groove will work and there's even a bit of draft to work with.
The AMSOIL pilot ripped off a solid qualifying run as Kevin tied Brett Molzohn in qualifying (Brett was awarded the second starting slot). Kevin started the race and went in hot pursuit of Brett for the lead. He jumped to second early on and pressured Brett for many laps but wasn't able to make the move past for the top spot. The hard racing early had it's effect unfortunately as tires were important and as luck would have it the race would start with long, long green flag run.
Feeling the effect of worn tires early, Kevin could only watch as car after car slipped by. The downward slide found Kevin in seventeenth just short of the half way point and things didn't look good. Undaunted, Kevin got up on the wheel and slowly but surely carved his way back into the top ten. A late race caution with eight to go found Kevin sitting in sixth. On the restart Kevin was in with a tight pack and after moving forward to fourth got pinned in behind David Gray and actually dropped back to eight on the track. Fighting for any opportunity, Kevin got a tremendous run off turn two, ducked low and raced three wide into turn three. Those in attendance still don't know how he held the car down while maintaining so much speed.
When the pack exited turn four Kevin was solidly in fourth and had gapped the fifth place car by several car lengths. A mixup occurred behind the lead pack and the yellow was waving over the field before the leader got to the start-finish line. The race ended under green.
