Race Report - October 11th, 2005 - Race 30 of 36Kansas resembles the Chicago Speedway in Joliet Illinois but it drives differently. Kansas is a tire wear race with some drafting mixed in. The AMSOIL Chevy started deep in the field and it would take a break to get up front as the this particular track won't lead to a from the back charge. At the end of the first fuel run several drivers were short pitting because of tire wear issues but Kevin was running conservatively in hopes of stretching to the end of a fuel run. This strategy worked to advantage as the first caution waived for someone's flat tire and Kevin was still on the lead lap. Pitting for four tires and fuel, The ECI Express was now solidly in the top five and ready to compete for a top spot in the final rundown.
Kevin kept pace with perennial front runner from the North, Francois Coulliard. Kevin ducked in front to lead lap sixty four and then held a top three slot until a late race caution resulted in charges to the finish. Pitting for fresh tires, Kevin missed the box and lost one spot on lap 87. He regained the position only to loose it later when another costly pitstop resulted in only two tires changed. Kevin held everyone off as long as he could but two tires were not going to hold off four at the end and three drivers slipped by and resulted in a seventh place finish.
The run was better then the result and the team will look forward to coming back to Kansas that's for sure.
