Race Report - February 18th, 2008 - Race 1 of 36

All winter long sim-racers anticipate the kickoff of the sim-racing season and ride into the first race with such enthusiasm for everything new. For the ECI AMSOIL team, it is the chance to leverage all that was learned in the handfull of races entered late last season in preparation for the 2008 championship. It was clear to the team that the first race of the season can carry with it a large risk for trouble due to the fact that it's a restrictor place race. Many will agree that real start of the season comes the following week in California as it is a more conventional style of race. Still the opener is at the Daytona race and the team hoped to have a positive outcome but had perspective that if it ended up with a poor finish, that would not get spirits down. More about this as the recap plays on.

Dean did an outstanding job qualifying the AMSOIL Toyota. Qualifying at Daytona is not as important as other tracks. The green flag for the season opener waved and immediately Dean worked his way from his 14th starting spot to the top five. The euphoric feeling would be crushed almost immediately as contact within the top three resulted in more then half of the field sliding through the tri-oval in a huge melee. Dean slid through the grass and couldn't avoid contact with several cars.

After the resultant damage, it was clear that Dean faced the end of any chance at being competitive. Dean held on to the lead draft for a short period but running off the pace eventually led to him circiling around for the remainder of the race. Riding around for the remaining 97% of the race, Dean finished the race in sixteenth position, one lap down.
